Sobre Ruya
你好！I'm a native Mandarin speaker from China, now based in Lisbon.
I've taught Mandarin for over seven years and English for twelve years, working with students from different countries, backgrounds and learning levels.
Beyond teaching, I have a background in English literature, creative writing, screenwriting and translation. I'm also a Chinese calligraphy practitioner and workshop facilitator.
These experiences have shaped the way I teach. I'm fascinated not only by what languages mean, but by how they work — how they reflect culture, influence our thinking and allow us to express ourselves.
Having learned several foreign languages myself, I understand the challenges of learning something unfamiliar. I also know that different people learn in very different ways.
Some students prefer clear structures and logical explanations. Others learn best through conversations, visual associations, stories or hands-on activities. I enjoy discovering what makes learning click for each individual.
My aim is to make Chinese accessible without oversimplifying it, and to help you discover the language as something useful, fascinating and genuinely enjoyable.

Chinese is more than a language. It's a different way of seeing the world.
Why does one Chinese character contain an entire story? How do Chinese people express ideas differently from English speakers? And how can you start speaking Mandarin naturally without memorising endless lists of vocabulary?
In my lessons, we explore these questions while building your ability to communicate confidently in real life.
I believe effective language learning should be practical, intellectually stimulating and enjoyable. Rather than following a textbook rigidly, I design lessons around your interests, goals and learning style.
What you can expect:
- Real conversations: Learn to express yourself in everyday situations, from ordering food and making friends to discussing work, travel and culture.
- Understand how Chinese works: Discover the patterns behind sentence structures, pronunciation, tones and characters, so that learning feels logical rather than overwhelming.
- Language through culture: Explore Chinese expressions, character origins, traditions and contemporary life, with connections to literature, cinema and art.
- Creative, personalised activities: Learn through stories, role-plays, visual materials and meaningful discussions instead of mechanical exercises.
- A clear sense of progress: Build on what you already know, practise actively and gradually become more independent and confident.
Whether you're a complete beginner, returning to Chinese after a break or looking to improve your conversational fluency, we'll develop an approach that works for you.
My classes are particularly suited to curious adults who want to learn Chinese in a way that is both effective and engaging.
Online and in-person lessons available in Lisbon. Classes are conducted primarily in English and Mandarin.
