Darryl is incredibly patient, encouraging and motivating. He was able to push me in English and Maths with clear explanations, lots of questions to check that I had understood the content - and I ended up with 92% and 100% in my GCSE-level exams for those two subjects! During my 7th grade, I encountered significant challenges in understanding both mathematical and English concepts. At the time, my teacher emphasized rote memorization, requiring us to memorize both questions and answers. This approach, however, did not resonate with me, and I found it difficult to grasp the underlying principles of both subjects.

Fortunately, my perspective on learning changed when I began studying under the guidance of Mr. Darry Pais. Unlike traditional methods, Mr. Pais focused on teaching me to think critically and apply logical reasoning to solve problems in mathematics, while also encouraging me to develop my writing and comprehension skills in English. This shift in approach was transformative. Rather than simply memorizing solutions or pre-written phrases, I learned to break down complex problems, analyze them systematically, and apply relevant concepts in both subjects.

Although initially, it took me significantly longer to solve mathematical problems—sometimes up to 30 minutes, while others could complete them in 10—I found the process immensely rewarding. Similarly, when working on English assignments, I took the time to analyze literature, understand themes, and express my thoughts more coherently in writing. The satisfaction of arriving at the correct answer in math after considerable thought, and the joy of crafting a well-written essay in English, were unmatched. This experience not only deepened my understanding of both mathematics and English but also taught me the importance of thoroughness and persistence.

Through Mr. Pais' mentorship, I learned a crucial lesson that has shaped my approach to learning and problem-solving: memorization may yield short-term success, but it does not foster long-term growth or a deep understanding of concepts. True mastery comes from comprehending the material at a fundamental level. When concepts are well understood, they are retained naturally, and this deep-rooted understanding stays with you for life.

As Socrates wisely said, "I cannot teach anybody anything. I can only make them think." Mr. Pais didn't simply provide answers; he encouraged me to think, analyze, and understand the logic behind each solution in mathematics, and to think critically about language, literature, and communication in English. This approach allowed me to develop critical thinking skills that continue to serve me well, both in academics and in life.

The results of adopting this approach were evident in my subsequent academic performance. I consistently achieved excellent marks in mathematics and English, and both subjects became my favorites. However, the impact of Mr. Pais' teaching extended beyond the classroom. The critical thinking and logical reasoning skills I developed in mathematics and the ability to analyze and express myself clearly in English continue to serve me well in various aspects of life. In today's world, where problem-solving, innovation, and analytical thinking are highly valued, the lessons I learned from my mentor have proven to be invaluable.

In an age where information is abundant but understanding is often overlooked, it is more important than ever to prioritize comprehension over memorization. The ability to think critically, analyze problems, and apply knowledge in real-world scenarios is crucial not only in academics but also in professional and personal life. The lessons learned from my experience with Mr. Pais have shaped my lifelong approach to learning and have had a lasting impact on my personal growth.
